NRFit®- It’s coming for all of us!

8 July 2024
You’ve heard about the NRFit® transition, but do you really know what it involves? Are you familiar with this standard?

If you’ve come across the term NRFit® but haven’t paid much attention to it, this article is a must-read.

NRFit® is just the beginning

The rollout of the NRFit® standard in healthcare facilities follows the implementation of EN-Fit for the enteral route, and several more standards are expected in the coming years. That’s why it’s important to build on this experience. Anesthesiologists who are actively involved in the NRFit® transition will be better prepared to handle future standard deployments with confidence.

A brand-new connector system

The NRFit® standard, ISO 80369-6, is a passive safety measure designed to secure the medication administration process for neuraxial and perineural routes. This new connector system is physically distinct—with a smaller diameter and increased length compared to the Luer connector—making cross-connections impossible.

The primary goal is to reduce the risk of route administration errors. Every department and specialty is affected by this new directive—Anesthesiology, Neurology, Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Pain Management, and Surgery—all must prepare for this transition.
